more often then not ice is the way to go. Ice slows down the swelling in the area, so no matter what type of injury you want to ice. The general rule of thumb with a strain or sprain injury in regards to heat or ice are:
1st 48 hours, Ice, 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off during your waking hours
After 48 hours: heat
