Did you actually dislocate your knee, or did it slide out of the groove.? In a true dislocation, your kneecap won't go back into place by itself. This has to be done at the hospital. It's called an MUA. Manipulation under anesthetic.
If your kneecap slid off to the side, and went back into position by itself, this is called a sublexing patella. It's very common in teenagers, especially girls. The reason this happens is there is a muscle imbalance. Usually the stronger quad muscle pulls the kneecap off to the outside. A physiotherapist can give you exercises to strengthen the inside muscle. Sometimes the PT can tape your kneecap in the proper position. In worst case scenario the Dr can snip the quad muscle. This simple surgery is called a lateral releaseHealth Question & Answer

You knee is held in place by ligaments. If it is popping out then the ligaments are damaged. You need to see an orthopedic surgeon.Health Question & Answer
