What is the best sleeping habit?!

Question: What is the best sleeping habit.?
Ever since I have got back from Spring break (about 3 weeks ago) my sleeping pattern has been just horribly screwed up. I went from before falling asleep around 11pm or midnight to falling asleep at 6 am or 7am. However, the last couple days I have been taking about 3 naps during the course of a day, for about 2 to 3 hours a piece. I almost think now that I prefer the three naps in a day to one binge sleeping session because I feel I am wasting less time by sleeping. I prefer this because instead of falling asleep at 6 am and waking up at 2 pm on the weekends, or just passing out once I get home from class, I don't over sleep or waste my entire day sleeping. What do you think is the best way to correct my sleeping patter.? Or, do you think I should keep my three nap a day sleeping habit.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
You messed up your circadian rhythm, and your body is confused; that is all. It may feel like you are wasting time when you sleep the whole evening through, but you will probably be more productive if you sleep through the night.

The first thing you should do is try to pick a set time for sleeping and waking and stick to it, even on the weekends. You may need to adjust slowly because your rhythm is so far off now. Try going to bed a little earlier each week. While you maintain a set bed time and waking time, either only take one nap a day, or reduce the time of each of the naps to less than 25 minutes each. The next step would then be to either make the one nap less than 25 minutes or cut out the extra naps. If you make the one nap shorter, do this all at once rather than slowly, or you will be fighting a sleep cycle.

also, create a regular night-time ritual, and turn the computer and TV off at least half an hour before you go to bed. Don't exercise Don't eat a big meal at least an hour before bedtime. However, a small snack before bed may help you sleep. (Just don't eat anything too acidic or you might get reflux that will keep you up.) Avoid caffeine and alcohol at least four to five hours before bed. Keep exercising, but don't exercise for at least two hours before bed.

All of this will be difficult, especially if you are a college student, but this is what you need to do to get back on track. It may take a few weeks before you feel normal. At that point, the occasional late-night probably won't be too much of a problem except for the next day/possibly week if you don't get back on schedule right away.

This will take a lot of work to change, but you will feel much better if you do it. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

Most of this information came from the University of Maryland Sleep Disorders Center's page on sleep hygiene found here: http://www.umm.edu/sleep/sleep_hyg.htm

I didn't include everything on the page, and I added some stuff that I read before (sorry don't remember where). It would be worth your while to go check out the other info on the page I posted.Health Question & Answer

You could start to cut down on the amount of naps you are taking.
I think if you do this you will feel more tired at night. Try to go to bed and get up at the same time each day. If you do this I think your body will adjust itself. I hope you will get into a more restful normal sleep pattern. Good Luck.Health Question & Answer
