Dustbegone is right. Pain and numbness are symptoms of nerve compression. Other possible things you might experience include weakness of your fingers as well as a tingling sensation as if there are ants are crawling over them. These signs are often most obvious when your arm's been immobile for a few hours such as when you wake in the morning like in your case.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common form of nerve compression in the arm and is due to involvement of a nerve called the median nerve in the wrist joint. This typically occurs in women aged 30-60 and other risk factors include previous wrist injuries, rheumatoid arthritis and premenstrual fluid retention.

If CTS is what you have, you probably will have noticed that your little finger is not affected like the rest. If you have accompanying pain in your neck, then the other possibility is cervical spondylosis ie. degenerative changes of the neck.

I suggest you see your doctor who will be able to tell you more after he examines your hand for the precise distribution of involvement and confirm the diagnosis. CTS is a common and benign condition and treatment is usually straight forward. Splinting of the wrist with a brace as Dustbegone mentioned can be very helpful. If symptoms persist, a "H&L" injection or simple surgical procedure to release the pressure on the median nerve may be considered.

You may have a sleeping disorder. You might want to get checked soon. My aunt has a disorder that makes her stop breathing while she is asleep and her arms and legs go numb because of it.
It's most likely carpal tunnel. I experience the same thing. And it freaked me out. I thought I had some sort of circulation problem or something. I went to the doctor and he told me I have carpal tunnel. And then gave me a brace to wear when I go to sleep. It does help.
