What is a heart murmur?!

Question:
Answers:
A heart murmur is an abnormal heart sound that results from the turbulent flow of blood through the heart. Heart murmurs are usually detected by a physician using a stethoscope to listen to the heartbeat. Most heart murmurs are harmless or “innocent,” which means they are not associated with a disease or condition of the heart. Many, if not most, children will have a heart murmur at some point in their lives.

However, heart murmurs may also be the result of an underlying heart condition, such as the narrowing of one of the heart’s four valves (valvular stenosis) or heart disease that has been present from birth (congenital heart disease).

The underlying cause of a heart murmur is usually diagnosed through painless tests such as an echocardiogram blood tests and (if necessary) a minimally invasive test such as a cardiac catheterization. A treatment plan will be designed based on the underlying condition.

Other Answers:
Heart murmurs are most often caused by defective heart valves. A stenotic (sten-OT'ik) heart valve has a smaller-than-normal opening and can't open completely. A valve may also be unable to close completely. This leads to regurgitation, which is blood leaking backward through the valve when it should be closed.

Murmurs also can be caused by conditions such as pregnancy, fever, thyrotoxicosis (thi"ro-toks"ih-KO'sis) (a diseased condition resulting from an overactive thyroid gland) or anemia.

A diastolic (di"as-TOL'ik) murmur occurs when the heart muscle relaxes between beats. A systolic (sis-TOL'ik) murmur occurs when the heart muscle contracts. Systolic murmurs are graded by intensity (loudness) from one to six. A grade 1/6 is very faint, heard only with a special effort. A grade 6/6 is extremely loud. It's heard with a stethoscope slightly removed from the chest.

A heart murmur is an abnormal sound made by a person's heart. Sometimes it indicates that something is wrong, and sometimes it doesn't mean anything. When a doctor hears a heart murmur, he will usually order tests to find out if there is a problem.
it is a small hole in your heart that actually causes your heart to miss beat or depending on the size make a murmur sound when the doctor listens to it. i have one and it has never cause me much problems. then again it depends on its size.good luck!
It's when your heart beat irregularly, sometimes even skipping a beat. It's usually nothing to worry about - most people live long, normal & healthy lives. However, see a cardiologist to make sure it's not a symptom of something more serious.

It happened to me. I "suddenly" developed a heart murmur, after several tests - it was found that my aortic valve was defective. It's been replaced, but I'll always have the murmer.
