If thinking about how it hurts makes you scared, you should find some people with 30 or 50 year old tattoos. Then you'll be scared about how bad you'll look in a few years.

But it is kinda like giving birth, it hurts during it, but afterwards you forget all about that part. So, if you're set on doing it, don't psych yourself out of it. You'll live, just make sure you get something you won't regret in 20 years.

depends on where you what the tattoo. If you get it on your back around the shoulder blades it's not that painful. Also take two advil before getting it done will help a little.
I haven't done a tatoo. But you're doing something that can't be changed (ok, surgery.. but then the MONEY it costs) you really want to live with your hole life (even as grand mother). if it's worth it, then i find the pain is just a small thing.

Tattoos hurt worse when applied to areas with less meat and fat. Ankles, backs, wrists and necks all hurt considerably more than lets say the stomach, butt, breast or a meaty hip. I have to however add my two cents in with my answer and plead with you to NOT GET A TATTOO! PLEASE! There is nothing worse than ruining our bodies with some cruddy ink. It looks absolutely ghastly on women, especially as you get older. And lets face it, we can't fight with aging. Please, you will regret it later, especially when you try and put on a nice, classy, sophisticated dress later in the future and realize how horrible the tattoo makes you look. Consider Henna tattoos. They have black Henna tattoos now as well as colored. I have seen many and they look just fine. Good Luck and please think this over LONG AND HARD!
PS Please disregard member Katie's answer. DO NOT GET DRUNK OR TAKE ANY DRUGS! This is very dangerous and if the company is reputable they won't even take you of you've been drinking. Alcohol thins the blood and this is extremely bad for the experience! ~ Katie: Shame on you and NEVER give advice again!
As a parent, you probably have heard it all already, but I agree with the fellow who said to be sure to get something you won't regret in 20 years. Try to picture yourself as a bride facing your new in-laws and wanting them to believe you are a mature, responsible person to parent their grandchildren..and then try to imagine trying to explain to your children why they shouldn't do tatoos when you did.
Ive got two big tatoos and they did hurt but its a bearable pain.It doesnt hurt enough to make you cry its just like scratching.
i had one on my hip, it didn't hurt. think about where you would have one done (for when your older).

one on my inner ankle right above the ankle bone and it hurt like a mother! I've had two babies, one by cesarean - this was worse! But it was over relatively quickly and like child birth, it was worth it.
second one is on my upper buttock - lotsa fat, so you wouldn't think it hurt as much - WRONG! or maybe I just didn't remember how badly the 1st one hurt? =)
and for all of you a**holes out there saying, "don't do it, it will look horrible when your older." Waaaa! Get over yourself! I didn't give a flying fig when I was 32 and 38 and I won't give a flying fig when I'm 88!

Pain is pain, it doesn't matter where you get the tattoo. i have about 30 hours worth of work on my body, and every place feels different. If you are that unsure of it, you should wait until you find something that really strikes you.i.e., you want this beautiful picture on your skin so bad, you don't care if it hurts a little. i promise, it will be nothing like you imagined.

I have 4 now and going to get more.
The first 2 I got were on my arms, they didn't hurt at all.
The 3rd one I got is on my calf/ankle, it starts at my ankle and it's about 3 inches high. It hurt, but only when he was going down near my ankle other than that it was fine.
The 4th is on my back, right on my spine, I can say that HURT, but I'm still going back for more.
