seriously? there is no cocaine in novacaine. cocaine was used many years ago as an oral anesthetic. when applied topically, it gives marked anesthesia. unfortunately, it is absorbs systemically and this radically affects all organ systems. dentists stopped using novacaine a long time ago. the general public uses the term to refer to dental anesthesia. dentists use lidocaine primarily. other options include procaine, prilocaine, carbocaine, articaine, mepivicaine, marcaine, etc. each type has indications for use in certain clinical situations. some have epinephrine and some do not. in a patinet with a heart condition for example, a doctor will choose an anesthetic without epinephrine in most instances or he/she will limit the use of an epi-containing drug.
