Bariatric Surgery?!

Question:
Have you had it, and how are you doing? How long ago, and would you do it again? Would love to hear about your experiences or those of friends or loved ones that you know who have had it.

My surgery is scheduled for July 17.

Also, for those of you who have had lap band, are you happy with that, and would you have bypass if you had it to do over again?

Thanks in advance!

When I finally decided to have Laproscopic ByPass, it was a decision I made after 33 years of fighting with my weight. I had tried every diet, pills and weight loss programs that you can shake a stick at!

I had my surgery September 15, 2005 and have lost about 80 lbs since then. I would like to lose 20-25 more, maintain my weight for six months, then see about having a tummy tuck.

My immediate family was concerned, but understood my needs for having this. I decided not to tell anyone about my surgery as there were personal reasons why I didn't say anything. I finally started telling family members out it when my cousin had lap-band in March 2006 and my aunt was exetremely worried.

Lap band can be reversed, but not RNY. I have to make changes in my lifestyle and the way I eat; however, it's been worth it!

I wish you the very best!

nope.good luck though

I had a vertical banded gastroplasty and wouldn't do it again if someone paid me. If I could go back in time, I would find other alternatives. The surgery by itself did a lot to help me lose weight, but my new eating and exercise habits have really done all the work. I'm sick constantly. I throw up at least 1 of every 3 meals which leads to other health issues.

So many people go on to have worse problems afterwards, but those stories rarely make it into the mainstream because the medical community doesn't want to lose this new-found source of revenue. Further, people don't want to hear that there isn't a quick and easy alternative to good old fashioned healthy living.

I hope you reconsider your decision. If you don't - good luck, you're going to need it.

My daughter had gastric bypass surgery. She has lost 200+ and is looking and feeling great. She has also had her tummy tuck surgery. She would do it again. In the beginning you lose a lot because you can't eat anything. After the surgery you have to have a lifestyle change as well as changing your eating habits.Good Luck.

My friend was the first person in our state to get a lap-band. She was miserably sick at first but she ended up losing over 125 lbs and said she would do it again in a heartbeat, even the sick part. She did NOT end up thin or even chubby--she's still big, but much less than she was.

I have been trying for several years to get surgery but due to my husband's company constantly changing insurance, I'm having a hard time qualifying. I really don't want a bypass, I'd rather have the lap-band, but the surgeon I go to won't do the lap-band if you're over a certain weight (my friend's surgeon isn't taking new patients). So that's another problem for me.

Good luck with your surgery!
