Any experiences with newborns throwing up after feeding and it coming thru nasal!

Question:
Baby can't clear her throat and has trouble breathing after one of these episodes.
Answers:
You need to take the baby to the pediatrician. She could have a number of problems from pyloric stenosis to atresia or fistula of her trachea and esophagus. I can't help you anymore without knowing how often the baby does this, what color the food is after coming back out, and some other questions.

Other Answers:
How often does she do this? Could be the formula or something more serious then this.

When babies do that kind of throwing up then they say you should take them to the Doctors immediately!

If your child is less than two months old and the episodes are repeated and a more forceful projectile vomiting, you should call our office. Some newborns can have an obstruction at the exit of the stomach due to a thickened muscle. This is called pyloric stenosis and can cause persistent projectile vomiting with every feeding.

yes, my oldest son did this alot. It turns out he had reflux. You might want to discuss with the baby's doctor or pediatrician and get her opinion. I am an RN and know that keeping the medical field in the know is important.

More importantly, a result of such a choking episode can lead to "aspiration". My son did this several times and ended up with pneumonia.

Main Entry: as·pi·ra·tion
Pronunciation: "as-p&-'rA-sh&n
Function: noun
2 : a drawing of something in, out, up, or through by or as if by suction: as a : the act of breathing and especially of breathing in

**** b : the taking of foreign matter into the lungs with the respiratory current

Ways to reduce the risk of aspirating after eating we used were this:

#1 Keep the head of the baby way up for about an hour after eating/drinking.

#2 If this happens alot, your doctor may suggest adding a little rice cereal to milk/formula. We did this and the added weight DID help reduce the incidents. (we had to cut x's into the nipple tops to allow the formula to get drawn through, though)

#3 Do not "encourage" or force the baby to eat/drink after it appears to be done or wants to refuse additional feeding.

#4 Conversely, do not allow the baby to be a little piggy and eat too quickly.

I hope this helps. You can email me if you want to discuss this further.

As I said, I am an RN and my son did this behavior also.
