Fast Heart Beat Diagnosed as Anxiety?
Question:
I live in TX where many children have died due to heart faliure. No he does not play sports or any known allergies but we do have family history of Asthma and Diabetes (father)
Answer:
I had the same thing when I was a lot younger (now I'm 48). My heart would beat so fast, that I thought I would pass out. I was diagnosed with SVT (super ventricular tachycardia). This is where you actually have an extra heart beat. After trying to treat it with medication, they ended up doing a heart ablation. They went into my groin with catheters and went up into my heart and brought my heart rate to heart attack rate, then burned out that extra heart beat. I have been fine ever since then. I know it is scary for him, because it feels really weird to have your heart beating so fast. This is nothing to fool around with. I would suggest that you go to a different doctor if he is continuing to have this problem. Probably a cardiologist. That's where I ended up going after the emergency room of the hospital! Best of luck to you all!
I presume they did an electrocardiogram at hospital which was no doubt normal. If the heart beat was regular then anxiety or stress or call it what you will is the most likely cause. The pain in his left arm or numbness would have no relation to his heart. Young people only rarely die from heart failure - if they have a congenital defect which will have been apparent long before or very occasionally from cardiomyopathy. It is most unlikely to be that but if you are really worried ask your doctor for an echocardiogram to exclude it.
Assuming he had an anxiety attack, have him breathe into a brown paper bag for a minute or two. This will put more co2 and leass oxygene in his air. it will slow him down some, try it yourself. It helps. It's a quick cure for anxiety.
