Do antibotics lower your immune system?

Question:
I am on antibotics right now, clindamycin to be exact, for either mono or tonsilitis, still waiting for the blood tests...but if its mono wont the antibotics lower my immune system more and make it worse?

Answer:
It's not going to lower your immune system, per se. That is not what antibiotics do. They kill bacteria. ALL bacteria.

Mono is caused by a virus. If you have it, your symptoms will not get worse by taking an antibiotic. As a matter of fact, taking the cleocin will probably keep your from getting a secondary bacterial infection (like pneumonia, because your immune system is busy trying to fight off the mono).

Taking the antibiotics will not lower your immune system's effectiveness, otherwise, doctors wouldn't put anyone on them.
in a way it does. take acidophillus
Antibiotics can somewhat suppress your immune system, make sure you are taking a multi vitamin.
No. Antibiotics target specific groups of infectious organisms and allow the immune system to concentrate on other things.
yes, it is to be prescribe by a doctor, there is a certain amount of days that you need to be on it and your blood level need to be check every amount of times
No....they dont lower your immune system. But antibiotics won't work for mono because it's caused by a virus. It won't make the virus worse, it just won't make it better. Antibiotics sometimes make you more susceptible to infections caused by yeast because they kill off your natural bacterial flora that compete with these yeasts for things like food and such and that allows the yeast to take over.
