Exercise is a good spirit lifter and it helps with depression because it releases seratonin I believe. Go out for a brisk walk and you'll feel better!
Sometimes it can raise your self esteem. However, don't worry about it.
Exercise does not cause it. What does is something that has affected your life. Situational depression, or depression that is caused from brain short circuit. In the latter case you need to find a Psychiatrist.
Vigorus exercise tends to produce endorphins, which elevate mood(also known as "runners high"). I couldn't say for sure if the Lack of exercise caused your depression, but I can say that regular exercise will improve your mood, as well as your overall physical condition.
