Can Wal-Mart do this?

Question:
My husband works at Wal-Mart part-time. He went to the doctors today and they told him that he had to be off of work until March 1. He took the note into work and the personel managers had left so he left the note in the office and went and told his department manager. She said that they would have to approve it or deny it and to check back in tomarrow. Can they deny it? I would think that if he had a doctor's note telling him to take off work, they couldn't dispute that and make him work. Would they have grounds to fire him if he refused to go back in until March 1?
We live in Indiana but he works in Michigan.
He works in the cooler and he has been having trouble with the circulation in his hands. He found out it is a certain disease and he was put on medication.

Answer:
I work in personnel at another Wal-mart. He needs to ask for a medical leave of absence. Once the doctor signs the LOA and he turns it in, they cannot deny a medical LOA.
That's why we have the Family Medical Leave Act. Have him ask for one of those to fill out.
Did the job cause this disease? If so, you have a good worker's comp claim. Find out if the doctor will put it in writing that the job is the cause and then file it with the Walmart worker's comp office.
They should give him the leave. If they dont, take them to court.
If your HUSBAND works at wal-mart making 8 dollars an hour, trying to support a family.. then someone should just shoot him and take him out of his misery
i just went through something recently. i worked at a day care and have had 3 kidney surgeries. i was put out of work for 8 weeks when i found myself in the hospital. i had my last surgery yesterday. i haven't been able to lift more than 10lbs. your husband needs to read a policy hand book. as well as any papers he may have signed at the beginning of employment. i have lost my job because of this and contacted an attorney as well as the better business bureau. although i lost my job there was nothing i could do. i was only there for 10 months which kept me from qualifying for the medical leave of absence. i had doctors notes. nothing stood in stone though with my employer. i hate to say it but yes, what there doing is legal and it sucks.
Your husband needs to check into the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
